The Mighty Hercules – Warbird Radio LIVE! – Episode 631

WARBIRD RADIO – Colonel Larry Gallogly (RIANG – Retired ) from Lockheed Martin Corporation joins Matt Jolley on this episode of Warbird Radio LIVE!  Before going to work for Lockheed Martin, Colonel Gallogly was the Wing Commander for the 143rd Air Lift Wing in Rhode Island.

Today, Colonel Gallogly oversees Business Development for Air Mobility Programs for Lockheed Martin and there are few people more up-to-date on the C-130J than Colonel Gallogly.  The Mighty Hercules is the longest continuously produced military aircraft in history (over 60 years) and still serves as the backbone of the United States Air Force’s Air Mobility Command.

Tonight we’ll learn latest on the C-130J and what’s next for this iconic aircraft.  Matt also welcomes Vincent T. Hill with news on his C-45 restoration project.  Mr. Hill is restoring the C-45 that was featured on WarbirdRadio.com last year.  As always your calls and comments are welcome!  Just use the contact information below.

UPDATE: C-45 Looking For Good Home – Click For Details

C-45-MAIN-IMAGEWARBIRD RADIO – Growing up near Jim Dering’s hangar was an experience.  It was the first place I remember feeling useful when it came to working on an airplane.  Mr. Dering had a job for everyone (even 10 year old kids hanging around with their Dad).  The old crop duster strip was filled with cobwebs and smelled like fertilizer and radial engine oil but something about that combination expanded the mind and dreams and flight.  No matter what the project was there was always a sense of calm and “can do” around Mr. Dering’s work bench.

For years Mr. Dering was an instructor at the local community college and taught young folks how to work on cars and trucks.  Airplanes were his hobby but his teaching skills carried over.  Mr. Dering and my Dad were both involved in the local CAF wing and it was their mentoring that lead to my life long love of aviation.

Mr. Dering loved his C-45.  It’s almost been a year since he flew west and now it’s time to find the Cannonball Express a good home.  The old girl has been kept inside and was in the process of “getting cleaned up” when Mr. Dering’s health began to slip.

The C-45 (and log books) can be seen by appointment and later this week we’ll post some of the details.  In the meantime take a look at the gallery and help us find this grand old bird a good home where the next generation of aviators can be inspired.

FYI…there’s also a Funk and a whole hangar filled with good stuff that needs a home as well.
