The Wings Over New Zealand Show – Iroquois with Des Gyde – Episode 14

RNZAF_IroquoisWEBWARBIRD RADIO – On this episode of Wings Over New Zealand LIVE Show the date of broadcast here in New Zealand is the 15th of June 2016, which is exactly 50 years to the day since the arrival in New Zealand of NZ3801, the first RNZAF Bell UH-1 Iroquois helicopter. The type revolutionised Royal New Zealand Air Force operations and became an icon in New Zealand skies as it operated with the New Zealand Defence Force and many civilian organisations in an incredibly wide variety of roles.

The Iroquois fleet recently retired from RNZAF service and while a small few have now gone to museums, the rest of the fleet have been shipped to the USA to new owner Dakota Air Parts.    So in this show we will remember the glory days of the Iroquois. Dave will be speaking live to our guest Des Gyde who spent many years working with the Iroquois, first on the maintenance side as a Safety and Surface Technician, before becoming a Helicopter Crewman. Des will tell some great memories of the Iroquois from his days based at Hobsonville, Wigram and Singapore with them, and on deployment to in places like Antarctica and the Sinai.

We’ll also have a round up of warbird related news from New Zealand and Australia, and Grant will give a quick take on the RAAF’s operation of the Iroquois too.

The Wings Over New Zealand Show – Hudson Stories! – Episode 13

Hudson_StoriesWARBIRD RADIO – The Wings Over New Zealand LIVE Show is back with another show for May 2016. Grant is away but Dave is joined by aviation journalist Nick McIndoe with some news from the kiwi warbird scene. And the feature story this month is marking 75 years since the first flight of the Lockheed Hudson medium bomber in New Zealand service. This aircraft type was revolutionary in military aviation in New Zealand and was the first bomber type that RNZAF was able to take to the fight on the front lines during the Pacific War. Dave interviews two aircrew members who served on the same crew during WWII, navigator Ron Wilson-Walker and wireless-operator/air gunner Merv Davies. They served in No. 3 (General Reconnaissance) Squadron, RNZAF, flying from Guadalcanal with the famous Cactus Air Force.
