  WARBIRD RADIO – On this episode of Warbird Radio Presents we work to solve a B-29’s mysterious past.  Inside the Warner Robins Museum of Aviation is B-29, 44-84053.  From the outside, 44-84053 is just an ordinary late war B-29, it’s on the inside where the mystery begins. Unexplained seats in the aft section of the fuselage and missing records (prior to 1955) set the stage for something secret.  Was 053 part of a special forces unit post war or was she a member of a covert mission during WWII? DOWNLOAD OR PLAY THE PODCAST AT THE VERY BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE QUICK LINK:   Museum of Aviation   STORY UPDATE (01/30/15):  Since broadcasting this story in 2010, Warbird has confirmed 44-84053 was most likely used for Psychological Operations post World War II.  It’s secret mission would have been to deliver agents behind the Iron Curtain in Europe.  With help from a retired USAF Colonel (who doesn’t want us to print his name) and some clever research, it was discovered 053 has a high probability of being part the Air Resupply and Communications Service. Documented in Apollo’s Warriors – United States Air Force Operations During The Cold War, B-29’s configured like 053 were operated by the 582nd Air Resupply and Communications Group from RAF Molesworth.  In a strange twist of fate the B-29’s that were retro-fitted for this mission were stored and re-configured at the Robins Air Force Base depot in Warner Robins, Georgia before departing for Molesworth.  Today, 053 rests on the same property. “The required number of bombers were soon pulled from the mothball fleet at Robins AFB, Georgia, and restored for duty,some with fuselage markings still showing the number of combat missions flown over Japan.  These modifications included removing all guns for self-defense, saving those in the tail turret, and installing a “joe hole” in the former aft-belly gun turret space for parachutists to exit.  Resupply bundles would hang like clusters of melons in the bomb bay to be dropped like bombs as the plane passed over the drop zone.” – Apollo’s Warriors Some clues to 053’s past are still highly visible.  After careful examination around wheel wells and bomb bay doors,  black paint chips still remain.  The “joe hole” can clearly be seen in the aft belly turret and many other clues have helped lead to this hypothesis. NOTE:  At this point, the only way to definitively solve the mystery would be confirmation by a crew member or photo of 053 in action.  So naturally, we’re working on that now (grin).  We have located some very clear documentation supporting our theory but before going to print we’re going to get the full story.  If you have any thoughts, we’d love to hear from you! In Memory of Lt. Col. Edward J. Saylor – Doolittle Tokyo Raider

WARBIRD RADIO – We’re sadden to learn Lieutenant Colonel Edward J. Saylor, one of the 80 brave men known as the Doolittle Tokyo Raiders, has died.  Lt. Col. Saylor passed away quietly at his home in Washington State around 11:00am on Wednesday January, 28th, 2015. Warbird Radio spoke to Tom and Catherine Casey, long time friends and managers of the Doolittle Tokyo Raiders, who confirmed Mr. Saylor’s passing.  The Casey’s said: “We are truly saddened at the passing of Lt. Col. Ed Saylor, engineer of Crew 15. We are also very proud to have known and spent so much time with him. We will miss his sense of humor, his smile and his dedication to the legacy of Doolittle Tokyo Raid.” Lt. Col. Saylor requested there be no funeral or military ceremony.  His final wishes were simple, to be buried beside his wife.  If you’d like to honor the memory of Lt. Col. Warriors & Warbirds Museum Saves Vietnam Cargo Plane – Soon To Fly!

WARBIRD RADIO – Congratulations to our friends at the Warriors & Warbirds museum in Monroe, North Carolina.  Warriors & Warbirds recently acquired a rare Fairchild C-123K Provider.  According to a recent statement “Warriors & Warbirds is pleased to officially introduce our newest member of the fleet. The Ponderous Polly C-123K Provider.” The Provider was first designed as an assault glider for the United States Air Force and later developed into a powered multi-role transport platform.  Many C-123’s were scrapped after service in the Vietnam War due to one of their primary missions, spraying Agent Orange defoliant.  Warriors & Warbirds hopes to have their C-123K back in Monroe, North Carolina for their annual air show this November. Think You’re Cold? Take A Look At These Airmen – It’s 27 Below Zero!

WARBIRD RADIO – Think you’re cold?  Take a look at this! It’s 6:30 a.m., 27 degrees below zero and the sky remains dark. According to a recent news release, Senior Airman Taylor Lancaster heads to his locker to sort his gear and make sure he has everything ready to begin work in the frigid weather.On top of multiple layers, he wears thick coveralls and heavy duty boots that allow him to trudge through ice and snow. His face is guarded by a face shield and shatter proof snow goggles.  After being at Minot Air Force Base for more than three years, Lancaster, a 5th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron aircraft crew chief, has worked on his jet enough to know exactly what to do once it lands. “Every jet is different, especially in the cold,” Lancaster said. “I love working on my jet because when it lands I already know what needs to be serviced.” At roll call, the maintenance team gathers together where they are told what jets need repairs. They then head to the tool crib to load the equipment they’ll need for the day. Each crew chief is assigned a specific jet they are responsible for maintaining, although they all work together to meet the needs of the mission.Around 8:30 a.m. the sun begins to rise, allowing the flight line to defrost ever so slightly as the cold weather and ice lingers. “During the winter, what would normally be a 10 minute job takes anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour,” Lancaster said. Some of Minot’s harshest winter days can cause things on the jets to break more easily, meaning more work for maintenance Airmen. Because temperatures are known to potentially reach dangerous lows, maintenance members implement the buddy system to ensure safety while getting the mission done. “Training new Airmen can be a bit of a task when winter time rolls around,” he said. “Since it’s so cold, we can only spend so long out there before we have to go back inside and warm up.” Although the job can be tough at times, Lancaster tries to remind newer Airmen the mission is important. “Sometimes it’s hard to see the big picture when we’re out there working in these kinds of temperatures, but we have to remember what we’re doing is meaningful,” he added. Once the weather reaches 45 degrees below zero, maintenance on certain sections of the flight line will temporarily shut down. However, because temperatures read differently across the flight line, the team’s duty is to now provide maintenance for a different aircraft. Currently, Lancaster is working to get flight certified, which will provide him the opportunity to fly with the aircrew and work on the jet as soon as it lands. “I wanted to do this because it gets me more involved,” Lancaster said. “It’s a great feeling to be able to get up in the jet that I worked on and take off with the aircrew.” With three years under his belt, Lancaster hasn’t made any final decisions on whether he’s going to re-enlist, but the future seems to be getting brighter. “It was hard for me to really look ahead when I first got here,” Lancaster said. “Now that I’m comfortable, confident and getting more responsibilities handed down to me, it’s making me realize that I know what I’m doing and no matter what I know I can do it.” A hearty thank you to all who serve and those who have. The Real R2-D2 Takes Flight!

WARBIRD RADIO – Tucked away in the high desert of southern New Mexico, the 96th Test Group provides some of the most sophisticated military testing in the world. Often, their innovations and technological pursuits seem like works of science fiction, such as the group’s latest project dubbed affectionately as ‘R2-D2.’ According to a recent news release, Second Lt. Troy Biersack, a 746th Test Squadron program manager, explained the project began from a need to design a platform that could serve to perform high-dynamic testing of new GPS technology inside the 56 year-old T-38 Talon. The culmination of efforts across the 96th TG led to the creation of a rear cockpit mounted electronics package reminiscent of the beloved Star Wars’ robot. “The similarities between our RCP and R2-D2 would be that it’s in the rear seat and it’s got this funny little cap on the top which functions as an antenna,” Biersack described. “We started jokingly referring to it as R2-D2 as the project developed, and it just stuck.” Building the RCP required careful coordination. The 746th TS performed program management, test management, integration of equipment and ground test data analysis, while the 846th TS managed the mechanical design and fabrication. Finally, the 586th FTS led the flight certification process and coordinated the installation and removal of the RCP. “It is a point of collective pride that the squadrons each possess such unique capabilities, yet they work so well together,” Biersack said. “Our leadership is promoting innovation and cohesion. This dynamic exists across the squadrons, enabling us to quickly identify and leverage the correct talent.” Biersack served as the program manager for the RCP project, overseeing each phase of development between squadrons to ensure the process was seamless. “My charge was to maintain program vector and momentum while standing clear of the experts. I was responsible for budget, for keeping it on track and holding people accountable to getting things done on time,” he said. As Biersack explained, one of the unique challenges of the project was designing a rack that could fit inside the aging T-38 without negatively affecting the pre-existing conditions of the aircraft. The 746th TS developed the requirements to construct the RCP. The 846th Test Squadron then began to work on the mechanical design and fabrication of the rack. “When the fabricated rack arrived from the 846th, for us it was one of the biggest moments of the entire project,” Biersack said. “It was such a great feeling to see how far we’d come, and to bear the fruits of our labor in such a tangible way.” Once fabricated, the RCP then had to undergo a series of ground testing and safety reviews before it could become airborne. Erin Morgenstern, a 746th TS unit test safety manager, explained that their biggest priority was to ensure that installing the rack would not interfere with the aircraft’s ejection system. “The pilots had to change their ejection settings in order for the gas lines to cooperate with the RCP,” Morgenstern said. “We had to make sure there were no hazards to the aircrew upon ejection and that the equipment stayed with plane also so there could be no mid-air collisions.” Finally, once the equipment had been checked out, the RCP was sent to the 586th FTS so it could be flown in the T-38 for initial flight testing. “The moment it all came to together, the big ‘Kumbaya,’ was the eight sorties that were flown by the 586th went off without a hitch,” Biersack said. Seeing the data from our analysts showing that this rack is just as good as the rack we’re replacing it with.” As it all came together, the members of the RCP project could see their own little piece of science-fiction forming before their eyes. “In order to accomplish something like this, you’ve got to chip away at it bit by bit, piece by piece,” Biersack said. “And sometimes it’s amazing to just look back, pick your head up from the grind and see everything that’s been accomplished.” QUICK LINK:  United States Air Force Story Courtesy Senior Airman Daniel Liddicoet, 49th Wing Public Affairs USAF Photo Courtesy USAF   Read More →

New Zealand Catalina Set for Triumphant Return at Wanaka Air Show!

WARBIRD RADIO – New Zealand’s only airworthy Catalina Flying Boat is set to make a triumphant return from major refurbishment work at next year’s Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow.  According to a recent news release, ZK-PBY has been a favourite at Wanaka for a number of years, especially when she lands on the lake, but was missing in 2014 because of extensive work to repair the wings and fuselage of the 70-year-old aircraft.  The work has been carried out in Brett Emeny’s hangar in New Plymouth by members of the New Zealand Catalina Preservation Society at a cost of around $250,000. Brett says it’s great to see an end to what has been a major undertaking and the plan is to have the Catalina airborne later in the year.  “We’ve done all the structural work on the wings and fuselage and all that remains are some fabric repairs on these two sections.  We’re also taking advantage of some fine weather to work on the tail which is poking out the hangar doors.” “Then there’s a fair bit of re-assembling work to do and we’ll need to get it weighed and re-certified before we can take her out for a test flight.” Brett says the plan is to have the Catalina make her first Airshow appearance since the refurbishment began, at Wanaka 2016.  It will be the first time the aircraft has displayed at Wanaka since the 2010 event. Warbirds Over Wanaka Event Manager, Mandy Deans says they’re excited about having ZK-PBY display next Easter and being available for the public to book rides. “We get regular calls from people asking if the Catalina is going to be at WOW and it’s great to be able to tell people now that yes, subject to final availability, she will be here,” said Mandy. It’s expected the Catalina will be taking the public on flights during the airshow but also on the Rides Day which will be Monday, March 28th. “Rides Day gives people the opportunity to enjoy the airshow and then stay on for another day to take a flight in the Catalina and other aircraft,” said Mandy. United States Air Force Senior Leadership – Discusses Future Plans & Key Issues

WARBIRD RADIO – Senior leadership addressed the key issues, priorities, initiatives and challenges facing the Air Force during the State of the Air Force press briefing, Jan. 15 at the Pentagon. According to a recent news release, Secretary of the Air Force Deborah Lee James and Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Welsh III, focused on the Air Force’s highest priorities and said they have been working hard to balance resources and preserve combat capability in a tough fiscal environment. “Everyone wants more Air Force,” James said. “We’re meeting those demands with the smallest force in our history. Couple a smaller force against the backdrop of austere budgets, and you have a total force that is under significant strain: active duty, Guard, Reserve, civilian, and their families.” Welsh had the same concern. “It’s about some very tough decisions we have to make to recapitalize on the Air Force for the threat 10 years from now,” Welsh said. “We don’t have enough money last year or this coming year to fund all the things that we currently have in our force structure.” While fiscal year 2015 still presents some enormous budget challenges for the Air Force, James and Welsh strongly agree enough is enough when it comes to force shaping and stated Airmen will see no involuntary boards in 2015. “We cannot go any lower,” Welsh said. “We are getting too small to succeed as opposed to too big to fail.” James said challenges with the budget in no way minimalize the responsibilities of the Air Force. “As Air Force demands around the world continue to increase,” she said. “We cannot afford to get smaller and sacrifice capability.” One of greatest demands James and Welsh addressed was intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance requirements. “Not only do combatant commanders want more ISR, they want the globally-integrated, persistent ISR that Air Force capabilities provide,” the secretary said. James and Welsh acknowledged the significant stress the high operations tempo has placed on its experienced operators. To combat that, they have developed a plan to meet combatant commander warfighting requirements while relieving some of the unrelenting strain felt by operators. The intentions of the ISR goals outlined by James and Welsh will provide near-term relief to stressed crews by implementing a number of options to immediately increase manning. The future of the Air Force continues its focus on balancing today’s readiness with tomorrow’s modernization. “The American people expect our Air Force to fly, fight and win against any advisory,” James said. “It is important that we continue to afford our nation the Air Force capability it needs well into the future by appropriately investing in our people and in our platforms.” QUICK LINK:  United States Air Force Story Courtesy USAF: Author, Tech. Larry Kelley Exercises B-25 “Panchito”
