Volunteers Help The B-25 Panchito Prepare For AirVenture 2014

WARBIRD RADIO – Volunteers at the Delaware Aviation Museum Foundation have been hard at work getting the B-25 Panchito ready for center stage at EAA’s AirVenture 2014.  Panchito’s pilot Larry Kelley dropped us a few pictures and this note: Thanks to Steve, Brendan, Guy, John Vance, Al, Ben, Erin, Phil, Steve Nuwer, Harry, Colin, and others for all of the help this past weekend.  We were able to do a good wash down with Mineral Spirits to get off the oily film, then wash completely and begin polishing, along with many much needed small repairs. Our hats to all of you who help keep them flyin’.  See you at AirVenture 2014! ~ The Warbird Radio Team.  Read More →

Atlanta Warbird Weekend Announces Dates & Ride Flights

WARBIRD RADIO – One of the last flying B-17 Flying Fortress bombers, “Sentimental Journey,” will lead a flight of vintage World War II aircraft to Peachtree Dekalb-Airport (KPDK),and inaugurate the Atlanta Warbird Weekend, September 27-28, 2014.  According to a recent news release, cockpit tours and flights will be available in the B-17 and other aircraft, including a P-51 Mustang and rare SBD Dauntless dive bomber. When first flown in 1934, the four-engine B-17 was one of the most advanced designs in the world.  During World War II, the aircraft was the primary bomber used by the United States Army Air Forces on long range missions against Nazi Germany.  Of the 12,731 B-17s originally built, 4,750 were lost in combat.  Only fifty airframes are known to exist around the world and less than a dozen are capable of flight. The Atlanta Warbird Weekend is a first-time project between two chapters of the Commemorative Air Force (CAF), Airbase Arizona located in Mesa, AZ and the Peachtree City, GA based Dixie Wing. Established in Texas in 1957 as a 501c3 education non-profit, the CAF is the oldest and largest World War II flying museum in the United States, dedicated to restoring and preserving in flying condition examples of aircraft flown by the United States during the Second World War. “Atlanta is home to the busiest airport in the world” said Jay Bess, the CAF Dixie Wing Marketing Officer “and Georgia is a state that has thrived on aviation commerce for nearly 100 years.  Our vision is to create an annual event that celebrates an important era of America’s aviation history.” Aviation is a vital element of Georgia’s economy.  A study published in 2011 by the Georgia Department of Transportation estimated total economic impact of Georgia’s 104 publicly-owned, public-use airports at $62 billion annually. As public fascination in World War II aircraft continues to grow, aviation-minded communities across the country are hosting aircraft tour stops as an alternative to more complex and expensive air shows. Bess explained the purpose of Atlanta Warbird Weekend: “Our goals are to teach World War II history, increase awareness of the Commemorative Air Force in Atlanta and raise much needed funds for the restoration, maintenance and operation of these aircraft.  Seeing these planes in the air brings history alive in a way a museum, textbook or video never will.” Veterans groups and education displays will also be on hand. Peachtree-Dekalb Airport was used as a Naval Air Station during World War II, training thousands of Navy and Marine pilots.  Today, the airport handles 200,000 aircraft operations each year and is known for hosting community events promoting aviation. Joining the Flying Fortress will be a North America P-51 Mustang, considered by most historians to be the best all-round fighter and premier bomber escort of the Second World War.  The B-17 and P-51 are often remembered as stable mates, with bomber crews nicknaming the protecting fighters “Little Friends”.  Fighter pilots in turn referred to the bombers as “Big Friends”.  A ride in a Flying Fortress or Mustang is a life long dream for many aviation and history enthusiasts. Organizers will also host “Big Friends, Little Friends” Dinner & Symposium at the 1940s-themed 57th Fighter Group Restaurant Saturday evening.  Noted author and historian, Bruce Gamble will give a B-17 presentation and moderate a bomber and fighter pilot panel discussion. Sentimental Journey has been continuously flown since it was manufactured in 1944, performing missions from military reconnaissance to drone “mother ship” during nuclear testing, as well as firefighting, before being retired after three decades of service. In 1978, the aircraft was donated to the then-named Arizona Wing based in Mesa, Arizona.  Volunteers have meticulously restored the Flying Fortress to full military specifications, painting the B-17 in the markings of the 457th Bomb Group as a tribute to all aircrew who served during WWII.  The aircraft also features artwork recreating a classic Betty Grable pin-up photo well known to GIs, sailors and Marines of The Greatest Generation.  A local media contest produced the name Sentimental Journey from over 800 entries. Sentimental Journey has been touring North America since the early 1980s and makes 60 stops annually.  2014 will mark the first return of the B-17 to Georgia since 1999.  An unforgettable flight inside Sentimental Journey and other aircraft start at $425 per person. Cockpit tours are only $5; ground viewing and photo opportunities are free to the visiting public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, Sept 27th-28th. QUICK LINK:  Atlanta Warbird Weekend  Read More →

US Navy Welcomes 14th P-8A Poseidon Aircraft

WARBIRD RADIO – The U.S. Navy’s expands it’s maritime patrol capabilities with delivery of the 14th P-8A Poseidon aircraft.  According to a recent news release, the P-8A, delivered on schedule, is now with its squadron at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Fla. Boeing will deliver seven more of the maritime patrol aircraft this year. “We’re putting P-8A aircraft through their paces out in the field and appreciate all the reliability, capabilities and improvements the Poseidon brings to the table,” said U.S. Navy Commander Tony Rossi, P-8A deputy program manager. “The next squadron is trained, ready to go and will begin conducting missions in the near future.” The first P-8A squadron deployed to Kadena, Japan, in December and has been conducting operational missions ever since. The second squadron will deploy this summer. “Our team appreciates the Navy’s urgency to induct additional P-8As into the fleet,” said Rick Heerdt, Boeing Mobility, Surveillance & Engagement vice president and program manager. “The positive feedback we’ve received about the aircraft currently in service is a great motivator.” Based on the Boeing Next-Generation 737-800 commercial airplane, the P-8A provides anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities. The Navy plans to purchase the versatile multi-mission aircraft to replace its P-3 Orion fleet. Boeing is currently under contract for 53 P-8As. The most recent delivery is the first from the third low-rate initial production contract awarded in 2012.  Read More →

P-8A Poseidon Entering Full Rate Production

WARBIRD RADIO – On the heels of the P-8A Poseidon squadron’s inaugural deployment, the Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Aircraft Program Office (PMA-290) recently announced it entered the full-rate production (FRP) phase of its development. According to a recent news release, the approval, reached Jan. 3 from the FRP Milestone Decision Authority will allow the program office, resource sponsor, acquisition community and industry to continue to deliver the P-8A to the fleet with the required capabilities needed to ensure the squadrons are getting a stable and efficient system. “This significant milestone approval moves the program from low-rate into full-rate production, and allows us to manufacture the remaining aircraft over the next several years with an opportunity for a cost-effective procurement,” said Cmdr. Tony Rossi, the integrated product team lead for the P-8A program. Aligned under the Naval Air Systems Command, the program’s current objective is to deliver 117 aircraft to the fleet. Thirteen of 37 Low Rate Initial Production (LRIP) aircraft have already been delivered to fleet squadrons, with all deliveries on or ahead of schedule. As the Naval Fleet Forces transition to the P-8A, from the P-3C, the Sailors will use these LRIP and future FRP aircraft to train and participate in operational missions. Currently, Patrol Squadron 16 (VP-16), who deployed in December, is equipped with LRIP aircraft. VP-16 and the second squadron with LRIP P-8As will receive their next upgrades through increments 2 and 3, which are the follow-up phases for capabilities for the P-8A aircraft and weapons systems. The next significant milestone for the P-8A program is initial operational capability (IOC) for Increment 2, which is scheduled for 2016, Rossi said. The P-8A’s current configuration, Increment 1, consists of the following capabilities: persistent armed anti-submarine warfare (ASW), an integrated sensor suite, and significant improvement in situational awareness. Increment 2 will consist of multi-static active coherent acoustics, automated identification system, and high-altitude ASW weapon capability. “This FRP milestone is a testament to the incredible effort and dedication of the P-8A team to deliver the P-8A to the fleet as planned,” said Capt. Scott Dillon, PMA-290 program manager. “The team has accomplished a lot over the last six months, from passing the Initial Operational Test and Evaluation period this summer to achieving IOC this fall and the P-8′s first operational deployment this winter. We are moving forward with a successful start to 2014 with the announcement of FRP. The high-quality work of the P-8A team has made this milestone possible. We look forward to having continued successes within the program.” The P-8A Poseidon will replace the P-3C Orion as a long-range anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft.
