The Niihau Zero – Author, Historian Syd Jones – Warbird Radio LIVE! – TONIGHT 8pm EST

WARBIRD RADIO – (NOTE: PODCAST POSTED BELOW)Author and historian, Captain Syd Jones, joins Matt Jolley with a look at his new book “Before and Beyond the Niihau Zero”.  Captain Jones has led an impressive life as a treasure hunter, historian, aviator and aircraft restoration expert.  Hear his story tonight on Warbird Radio LIVE (10/28/14 at 8pm EASTERN). “On the day of the attack on Pearl Harbor, a battle damaged Japanese Zero landed on a remote, privately owned Hawaiian island. The Zero pilot survived for almost a week on what locals call the “Forbidden Island”, assisted by a local worker while terrorizing the island’s population before being killed by a native Hawaiian. Though the air raid on December 7, 1941 caught many by surprise, the island’s owner had actually begun preparations against the attack years earlier, inspired by a remarkably accurate prophecy. The wreckage of the Japanese plane was abandoned on the island, but it’s legacy was not forgotten. Sixty five years later the Zero and the story surrounding it became part of a new aviation museum in Hawaii. The Zero display brought to the forefront what happened the day of the attack, the conflict that ensued on the island in the days that followed, while unexpectedly generating a modern controversy in the process. In researching the existence of the “Niihau Zero” the author was allowed unprecedented access to the “Forbidden Island”, was able to interview its owners and inhabitants, and arrange for the Zero artifacts to be placed on public display. This book contains original reports as well as documents never before published that give unique perspectives into one of the most curious and thought provoking events of WWII.” QUICK LINK:  Before and Beyond the Niihau Zero STUDIO LINE: 478-787-4768 SKYPE: warbirdradio EMAIL: matt@warbirdradio.com Warbird Radio LIVE! - Author Syd Jones The Niihau A6M Zero - Episode 544 Play Now | Play in Popup | Download (143) podPressShowHidePlayer('1', 'http://www.warbirdradio.com/podpress_trac/play/10712/0/Episode544-SydJones.mp3', 290, 24, 'false', 'http://www.warbirdradio.com/wp-content/plugins/podpress/images/vpreview_center.png', 'Warbird Radio LIVE! - Author Syd Jones The Niihau A6M Zero - Episode 544', 'WarbirdRadio.com'); Read More →

First Completed Global Hawk Makes History With 100th Flight

WARBIRD RADIO – The first completed Global Hawk has made history again with its 100th flight in support of NASA environmental research. According to a recent news release, the milestone occurred on a flight from Edwards Air Force Base in California more than 16 years after its first flight in 1998. The aircraft is now at Wallops Island for a two month deployment to conduct hurricane research missions. The aircraft, called AV1, was the first RQ-4 Global Hawk built under a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, Advanced Concept Technology Demonstrator program. Ryan Aeronautical Company built and tested the UAS, later acquired by Northrop Grumman Corporation. After completing production in February 1997, the aircraft underwent rigorous testing culminating in a successful first flight on Feb. 28, 1998. Due to restrictions preventing the aircraft from taking off in San Diego, the first flight required the Global Hawk to be disassembled and shipped in pieces to Edwards Air Force Base for reassembly and first flight. While still a developmental system, Global Hawk began supporting overseas contingency operations only two months after the September 11, 2001 attacks. Global Hawks continue to support combat and other important operations all over the world. After acquiring two pre-production Global Hawks from the Air Force, NASA and Northrop Grumman entered in to the Space Act Agreement. The partnership, signed in 2008, allows sharing of NASA Global Hawks for science missions and flight demonstrations. Under the agreement, Northrop Grumman provides technical, engineering, maintenance and operations support. With the ability to fly as high as 65,000 feet for periods of 30 hours, Global Hawks provide a combination of high altitude and long endurance performance capabilities that allow the science community to study scientific and environmental phenomena in depth. In April 2010, NASA sent AV1 on its first scientific mission to study the atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean. Fitted with 11 science instruments, the Global Hawk acquired and transmitted data that had never been seen before. Over the course of four flights and 82.5 cumulative flight hours, the aircraft traveled from Hawaii to Alaska collecting air, water and polar ice data. Since AV1’s first mission, NASA Global Hawks have flown missions all over the globe in support of environmental and scientific studies. In the fall of 2012, AV1 supported environmental scientists during Hurricane and Severe Storm Sentinel (HS3) missions. The HS3 missions studied the processes of hurricane formation and intensity change in the Atlantic Ocean. Prior to HS3, AV1 flew winter storm missions over the Pacific and Arctic, observing an “atmospheric river,” which sometimes causes flooding on the West Coast. NASA Global Hawks have also studied climate change and the effect of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. In addition to scientific and environmental research, AV1 participated in cutting edge technology demonstrations. Both NASA Global Hawks were used in a series of DARPA demonstrations used to advance UAS-to-UAS aerial refueling control system technology in 2012. In 2013, the Space Act Agreement was renewed for an additional five years, allowing NASA Global Hawks to continue to explore remotes parts of the planet and investigate environmental and scientific events.  Read More →

New LIVE Channel, New Studio, New Shows – Warbird Radio 2014 New Fall Lineup

WARBIRD RADIO – As summer comes to a close it’s time to get serious about cranking out some new shows.  The biggest news for our Fall 2014 season is that our LIVE channel is back with an all new format.  This new talk intense format brings back some of your favorite shows plus many news ones. More big news is that Warbird Radio LIVE moves from mornings to a weekly evening spot on Tuesday nights at 8pm (EASTERN).  Matt Jolley (host of Warbird Radio LIVE) says the new time slot gives guests and fans of the show a better chance of coming on during the live broadcast and sharing their thoughts and stories.  “The morning show was great…but 8pm (EASTERN) on Tuesday is prime territory for us.  The majority of our listeners are home from work and in their workshops or hangars and are looking for something fun to listen to.  We’re hoping they spend some time with us on Tuesday nights” says Jolley.  Despite the challenges of a storm damaged internet connection the numbers for the first episode on September 2nd were higher than the average listenership numbers during the morning time slot. The studio was completed last month but speaking of the storm damaged internet connection, a new fiber optic connection is being installed on the 4th of September.  This new connection will eliminate the shaky service the studio currently has during rain.  In addition to the new fiber optic line our virtual web player has changed as well.  Mike Chilson and his team have made it much easier to listen to Warbird Radio.com on mobile devices and for that matter, any platform you’d like to tune in with.  Just click the listen live button in the top right corner and give it a try. Podcasts of our live shows will continue to be available the following morning so listeners who prefer the on-demand capability can still listen at their leisure.  To listen to the recorded podcast just subscribe to the RSS feed or play the show directly from the show story page.  You can also download the file and play it remotely from the show story page as well.  The new functionality is something Chilson says will improve the “ease of use” for fans the world over. So what about the new shows?  Dave Homewood moves from podcaster to live broadcaster with a new LIVE version of the Wings Over New Zealand Show (debuts September 2014).  Wings Over New Zealand – LIVE will be our first show remotely produced from outside the USA.  The RNZAF has a rich history and Warbird Radio.com is ready to bring their stories to a broader audience.  Zane Adams is also back with a new show:  The Texas Warbird Report.  Zane’s new effort capitalizes on the Lone Star State and it’s overwhelming involvement with vintage military aviation.  Warbirds and warbird operators are almost as numerous in Texas as oil wells and Zane is ready to meet them all. The Texas Warbird Report’s inaugural episode goes live Tuesday night at 9pm (EASTERN) on September 9th 2014.  The League of WWI Aviation Historians will continue to produce Over The Front’s radio version and a new series featuring the women of warbirds is slated to start this fall as well.  Hartman & Heins are also back and go LIVE for the first time this fall (scary thought).  Their unique brand of humor is addictive and should go perfectly with your evening listening activities.  The show we’re perhaps most concerned with is one that our good friend Chris Henry is slated to host. The Crash Pad (working title) will be based in Oshkosh, Wisconsin and very close to a certain non-profit aviation organization nearby.  The hosts may or may not work there (at un-mentioned non-profit) and all live together.  There’s literally no telling where this show can go but it’s slated for takeoff this September as well.  So here’s a quick look at the current LIVE channel schedule: Warbird Radio LIVE:  8 hour – 2 hour Warbird Radio Presents: 11 hour – 5 hour Over The Front: 10 hour  – 4 hour – 10 hour Wings Over New Zealand: 6 hour – 12 hour Hartman & Heins:  1 hour – 7 hour The RC Scale Builder Show: 9 hour – 3 hour Be sure to check our Facebook page and click “Like” to stay up to date with your fellow listeners.  The address is www.facebook.com/warbirdradio.  To make it easy, with regards to listening to your favorite shows LIVE,  just remember to tune in Tuesday nights from 8pm – 10pm (EASTERN).  Thanks again for tuning in and being a part of our family since 2009! Sincerely – The Warbird Radio Team  Read More →

The Navy’s X-47B Compled Its Final Test Aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt

WARBIRD RADIO – The Navy’s X-47B completed its final test aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) Aug. 24 and returned to its home base at Naval Air Station Patuxent River after eight days at sea.  According to a recent news release, the X-47B flew in the carrier pattern with manned aircraft for the first time and conducted a total of five catapult launches, four arrestments and nine touch-and-go landings, including a night time shipboard flight deck handling evaluation. “This is another detachment for the record books; all tests were safely and effectively executed,” said Capt. Beau Duarte, Navy’s Unmanned Carrier Aviation program manager.  “We have set the bar for the future of unmanned carrier aviation.” Testing began Aug. 17 when the X-47B performed its initial cooperative launch and recovery cycle with an F/A-18.  With its automatic wing-fold capability and new tailhook retract system, the X-47B met the program’s objective to demonstrate that carrier-based manned and unmanned aircraft could maintain a 90 second aircraft launch and recovery interval. Throughout the week, the Navy/Northrop Grumman test team captured X-47B flying quality and recovery wind condition data to evaluate how the aircraft responds to wake turbulence during approach and landing. This data will be used to improve a simulation model for use with carrier-based aircraft. The team also evaluated how the unmanned aircraft performed during the first night time taxi and deck handling operations aboard a carrier. Since the shipboard environment presents different challenges at night, this test was an incremental step in developing the operational concept for more routine unmanned air system flight activity. “We conducted X-47B night flight deck operations to understand the human interface and suitability of the unmanned air vehicle and deck operator’s hand-held control unit in the night environment,” said Barbara Weathers, X-47B Unmanned Combat Air System lead. “These lessons learned will help with the development of future unmanned platforms.” The Navy will continue to execute shore-based testing at Patuxent River to further the goal of seamless integration with manned aircraft and to refine best practices for the evaluation of future unmanned air systems.  Read More →
